The Avian flu virus is a strain of influenza which is usually only found in birds. In most cases it lays dormant in the birds and causes no harm. Sometimes however, it can spread from bird to bird, causing them to become very ill and even causing them to die in massive numbers. It is possible for a human being to contract the avian flu virus by coming into contact with infected bird droppings or by eating infected poultry. Currently there have been very few cases of the Avian Flu reported worldwide. However, the medical community stresses their concerns over the potential of this flu strain mutating and spreading rapidly amongst humans, listing it as a potential pandemic.
The flu can strike when you least expect it to and it typically leaves most people bedridden for days. There are some classic signs and symptoms that influenza has. Here are a few common indicators:
Only take Tamiflu as directed to by your medical care practitioner. Tamiflu is available in pill-form and in liquid for children. Tamiflu is only effective if taken within 48-hours of contracting the flu virus, or if taken before contracting the flu virus.
Neuraminidase is a rigid protein that lives on the cell walls of the influenza virus. It assists the virus in breaking through the outer cell walls and allowing itself to replicate in the system. Tamiflu works as a neuraminidase inhibitor, disabling this protein and confining the virus to the cells that it has already infected, not allowing it to spread further; eventually the virus dies off.
