Nexium Overview – Acid Reflux Medication

Nexium (esomeprazole) is a prescription anti-acid medication which is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD or heartburn; acid reflux), ulcers, erosive esophagitis and other issues involving the overproduction of acid in the stomach.

How Does Nexium Work?

Nexium works by reducing the amount of acid that the stomach produces. By reducing the amount of acid in the stomach, Nexium allows the esophagus to heal. Nexium is designed to be used for a short-term treatment (4-8 weeks) to heal the damage of the esophagus and to reduce heartburn symptoms.

How to take Nexium for Heart Burn:

Only take this medication as directed to by your doctor or pharmacist. Take each dose at the scheduled time with a full glass of water. Do not break the tablets or chew them, they are specially formulated to time-release in the system. If you miss a dose take it as soon as you can and keep taking your other scheduled doses.

What are the Symptoms of GERD?

There are some very common symptoms to GERD otherwise, they include:

• Warming or heating sensation in chest
• Burning in chest
• Heat or pain in chest
• Acidic feeling in esophagus

What is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux is a condition that occurs when acid in the stomach backs up and overflows into the esophagus.

Nexium Side Effects:

There are some side effects which can potentially occur when taking Nexium, they include:

• Headache
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Flatulence
• Abdominal pain
• Constipation
• Dry mouth
• In rare cases a serious allergic reaction can occur, which may involve the following symptoms: hives or the swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. If you experience any of these rare yet serious allergic reactions—STOP taking Nexium and seek immediate medical care

Nexium Precautions:

Always makes sure that you tell your doctor about ALL of the drugs you are taking to avoid any reactions of interactions from occurring. Women who are breastfeeding should inform their doctor before taking Nexium as well as those who suffer from liver disease. Anybody who is currently taking medications containing: digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), or iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, and Femiron) may not be able to take Nexium.
