Metrogel Overview – Rosacea Medication

Metrogel (metronidazole topical) is a powerful prescription topical gel which is used to treat patients who suffer from chronic acne, rosacea or acne rosacea. When used as directed this drug has been clinically proven to reduce and to eliminate the associated symptoms in a relatively short amount of time.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin condition most often found in adults ages thirty or older. It is more commonly found in people who have fair skin. It is caused by the red blood cells dilating, which then rise to the surface, appearing as red lines on the face. Rosacea can also be accompanied by acne similar to teenage acne. It most often surfaces on areas of the face which are already prone to blushing.

Symptoms of Acne Rosacea:

Acne rosacea is a very common amongst the many people who suffer from rosacea. It can surface at any time and most resembles teenage acne. Here are a few of the associated symptoms:

• Reddening of the skin
• Irritation of the skin
• Formation of pustules (pimples) that can fill with puss, and ooze or crust over

How to Take Metrogel:

Only take Metrogel as directed to by your medical care practitioner or your pharmacist. Make sure that you thoroughly cleanse the affected area prior to application. Most often it will be prescribed to be applied two times per day, once in the morning and once at night. If you miss an application of Metrogel apply it the first chance that you get. If it is near when you would apply your next scheduled application, skip the missed application and keep using Metrogel as directed.

How Does Metrogel Work?

When applied this medication is absorbed deep into the skin pores. It works to eliminate rosacea by attacking and killing the bacteria which causes inflammation and also that causes acne rosacea to surface. Metrogel does take a few weeks to work effectively, most commonly two-three weeks.

Side Effects of Metrogel Include:

There are some potential side effects which you may experience when using Metrogel, they include the following:

• Burning
• Itching
• Dryness
• Flakiness
• Irritation
• Redness
• Nausea
• Tingling
• Numbness
• Metallic taste in mouth

Metrogel Precautions:

Make sure that you discuss with your physician ANY and ALL drugs, lotions, topical creams, ointments, gels and skin care products that you are currently using in order to avoid any potential interactions or allergic reactions from occurring. Women that are pregnant or who are currently breastfeeding should make sure that their doctor is made aware of this before using Metrogel.
