Aldara was developed to treat external genital or perianal warts. Aldara was designed not only to get rid of warts, but also to cause the body to fight the underlying problem as well.
Aldara triggers the immune system. When used on externally affected genitals or the perianal area, the body’s immune response is called into action, and works to get rid of any infected cells. Eventually, the wart is dissolved and the infected area clears. This process can be completed in as little as 4-5 weeks, but length may vary.
Generally, the medication is used every other day, up to three times per week. It should be applied to the affected area only. Aldara should never be applied to infected or damaged skin, or open wounds, without checking with your doctor first. Aldara is typically applied before you go to sleep. The advantage of Aldara is that it is much less intrusive and embarrassing, and it can also be applied at home in a matter of minutes. Aldara is not painful for most people that use it.
With any medication you take, you may encounter side-effects. However, most people who experience side-effects while taking Aldara report that they are generally mild. Side effects may include dryness, swelling or redness on the application area. Be sure to notify your doctor if you experience hives, itching, difficulty breathing or swelling of the mouth, face or tongue, as these may be signs of an allergic reaction to Aldara.
You should check with your doctor before using Aldara if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have any allergies, or suffer from any type of immune system disorder, to make sure that Aldara is right for you.
